HISTORY

          The Philippine Chen Kuang High School (PCKHS)  is a non –stock,non sectarian educational institution that was established on May 7, 1950 by Mr. Ho Tsu Hsing (何祖炘) , a visionary educator of Chinese Descent. It is nestled on a 3,211 sq. m. lot at the corner of P. Parada and E.  Santos Streets in Brgy. Sta Lucia ,San Juan City. And Mr. Ho served as the first Principal. The school gained recognition to operate a complete Elementary Course through Department of Education Article 2716.

      The following Principal followed. Mrs. Xie Xiu He(謝修和),Mr. Chen Bin Yi (陳秉毅) and Mr. Ta Tay Hua (陳泰華).The fifth principal, Mr. Cao Pek (a.k.a. Dee Hwa Liong 李華龍) was also the Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Together with its Chairman, Mr. Shih Chang Shangkuan (上官世璋),he spearheaded the replacement of the old wooden school building(affectionately called the “Spanish House”) with a modrn structure with 40 classrooms to support its growing enrollment. This was also the time when the school opened its first High School Class  with 31 students. On September 26, 1990 , the school was given full recognition through the Department of  Education Article 2706 to operate a complete secondary Course as amended by the Secretary of Education. After the death of  Mr. Cao Pek, Mr. Shangkuan became the sixth principal, serving as Officer-in – Charge.

      The seventh principal was Mrs. Monica Fan Ming Ying (范鳴英) , who served from 1994 to 2014. It was under her 20 years of leadership that a second building was built. It housed a large gymnasium, the school library, 2 science laboratory rooms, a speech laboratory and the Industrial Arts room, and added an auditorium, a dance room and preschool activity room. On its 50th or Golden Anniversary, the school presented a talent shaw entitled “ A New Dawn” at the PhilAm Life Theater. In recognition of her achievements, she was awarded Outstanding Chinese School Principal that year, Dr Alfonso Uy(黄禎潭),the  Chairman of the Board of Trustees, served as Acting Principal when Mrs. Fan Ming Ying fell sick.

     On SY 2015-2016, Dr, Steve Christopher Wong (黄思華) became the ninth principal. With the full support of the Board of Trustees headed by its Chairman , Dr. Alfonso Uy, he advocated 21st laboratory, digital speech laboratory and multimedia equipment in all classrooms. Through the initiative of Dr. Alfonso Uy, a new playground was also built for the preschool department.

It was during this school year that the school began the implementation of the Enhanced Basic Education Curriculum (EBEC)or the K to 12  Law. This law required the Kindergarten and Senior High School Program. The school got its permit to offer Senior High School in 2015.

     In SY 2016-2017, the school opened its first Senior High School classes following the Academic track with three strands, namely Accounting, Business and Management (ABM), Science ,Technology,Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Humanities and Social Sciences(HUMSS).

      In SY 2017-2018, Mr. Alex Yap, was elected as the  new Board of Trustees, with Dr. Alfonso Uy  staying on as Honorary Chairman.

It was in the SY 2018 – 2019 that the school undertook the task of applying for accreditation with the Association of Christian Schools, Colleges and Universities – Accrediting Council, Inx. (ACSCU – ACI). On December 11, 2018, the school was granted candidate status for its Preschool, Elementary and Junior High School programs. In 2019, with the invaluable support of all the members of the school community, the school was granted Level 1 Status by the accrediting body (ACSCU). It was a great honor and achievement for the school to finally be recognized as one of the educational institution that provides quality education to its students.

To further attest to this, the school was given the award  – ISA (Innovation in Education) from the Amity University in Dubai, UAE last Dec. 22, 2019.

Last December 16, 2020, the school received a Cert.of Appreciation from Barangay. Sta. Lucia for being a partner in the development of the community. Also, several awards of appreciation were given by the different NGO’s such as Ambassador of Learning Chinese is Fun Movement of the Chinovation and the Mandaluyong Business Club,  just to name a few.

As the new year begins, the general atmosphere of the school is one of great anticipation towards more milestones and achievements. Last Jan. 11, 2020, our very own principal Dr. Steve Christopher Wong was awarded Outstanding School Head in Bayleaf Hotel, Cavite by Asia Pacific Association of Educator’s Training Institute(APAETI). The same award was also given to him by the International Educational Summit  2020 in Thailand last February 22, 2020.

Through its board, administration, faculty and staff, the Philippine Chen Kuang High School remains committed to providing quality, world – class, 21st century education to its learners from preschool to Grade 12. And with the coming 2020 – 2022, there will be a new chairman for the Board of Trustees – Mr. Stephen Chang who will continue the work of his predecessors in leading us to greater heights.
